Huskies and Cougars and Cats, OH MY!
Oct. 9, 2007
I am very excited to give all of our biggest fans an inside look at Sun Devil Volleyball. If you follow our team then you know our stats and namess. However, what you don't know is our personalities and all of the extra work it takes to be a part of this special program.
On Wednesday of last week we set off for Washington to play the Washington Huskies in Seattle on Thursday. After that it was off to play the Washington State Cougars in Pullman on Friday. This trip was our hardest and longest trip of the year because the schools are so far apart. Even though this trip was tedious I think all of the girls can agree with me that staying in downtown Seattle, especially when it's not raining, is absolutely beautiful. We all enjoyed ourselves at the Cheesecake Factory on Wednesday night while waiting for the latest updates of the Diamondbacks game. One thing that you have to know about our team is our passion for all sports. We are constantly watching Sports Center before games or practice to get our sports fix! So of course we were very happy to hear the Diamondbacks had won. The next day we had a light morning practice of serving and passing. Then we ate a huge breakfast at one of our favorite places in Seattle. That night we prepared to face the #8 Huskies. We knew a lot about the Huskies because they run the same type of offense that we do. The gym at Bank of America Arena was filled with purple and of course we had to endure the Huskies faithful. The games were very close and we had a lead in each of the three games. I expect another close hard-fought battle when we play them back home in Tempe.
On Friday morning we set off for Pullman, Wa., to play WSU. We were surprised to find out that we were flying directly into Pullman. This scared a lot of us especially because the plane we flew on was very small. Surprisingly for all of the traveling that we do we still have a couple girls that hate to fly (Sydney and Staci ;-) ). When we arrived in Pullman we were pumped to play the Cougars because it was their homecoming weekend and our football team was playing them that Saturday. Pullman is one of the hardest if not THE hardest place to play in the Pac 10. Bohler gym is a volleyball-only gym and it feels like the fans are right on top of you! They even have organized cheers to distract you while you are serving! They had a packed house when we played them on Friday night. We didn't let the fans distract us and we came out strong and never looked back. We ended up sweeping the Cougars in three games. It was nice to see our athletic director and assistant athletic director there as well as some of our women's basketball friends who graduated last year. I also was happy to see my family :-) (I had to give them a shout out!)
Now we are back home and its U OF A WEEK! It may be our most important match of the year! Playing against U of A and representing the Sun Devils in this rivalry is a feeling you can't explain. Every point, every emotion just means that much more when we play the Wildcats. Last year when we won in Tucson it was one of the most exhilarating feelings of my whole athletic career. So as you can only imagine we are training hard and getting ready to BEAT THE CATS! Hopefully you all can make it. If you live nearby, the game is at 7 p.m. on Friday at Wells Fargo Arena. If not the game is going to be televised on Fox Sports Net on Saturday and Sunday. Hope to see you all there it is going to be an intense match that you can't miss!!
---Talk to you all soon, Ali
