WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- UCLA sophomore forward Lauren Cheney has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 2-Oct. 8, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Cheney, from Indianapolis, Ind., currently leads the Pac-10 in scoring with 26 points (11g, 4a) after her seven point weekend helped to lead the second-ranked Bruins to wins over San Diego State and No. 5 Santa Clara.
The sophomore assisted on the Bruins' first goal and added a goal of her own as the Bruins opened the week with a 5-1 victory over San Diego State.
Cheney returned on Sunday to score two more goals, as UCLA handed Santa Clara just its second loss of the season. The win vaulted UCLA to its first-ever No. 1 ranking in this week's NSCAA/Adidas Coaches Poll.
UCLA (7-1-2) has not lost a match since opening the season with a defeat at the hands of Texas and opens Pac-10 play this week, hosting Oregon State on Friday and Oregon on Sunday. The Oregon-UCLA match will be televised on Fox Sports Net on a tape-delay basis. Check your local listings.
