Pauley Pavilion Project Update
Oct. 10, 2007
UCLA Athletics has advanced the Pauley Pavilion renovation process into the next phase of planning for the expansion and renovation of the historic structure. Pauley Pavilion has been a campus landmark for more than 40 years and the home court of 38 NCAA championship teams.
In February 2007, UCLA hired HOK Sport to complete the preliminary design phase for the project. The preliminary phase studied the existing infrastructure and developed various concept approaches for UCLA to examine. The next stage moves the process into 'pre-schematic design' and will allow for the project to be further defined and developed into detailed drawings, specifications, and plans. UCLA will post advertisements for executive architectual firms to submit proposals for the pre-schematic design phase. A campus selection committee will pick from the qualified firms.
'We are extremely grateful and appreciative for the work that HOK completed during the preliminary design study. Their team provided great perspective on the project and the process yielded valuable information that allows the University to make solid decisions about the total scope of the project,' said UCLA Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero. 'We are excited about the next steps in the design process and showcasing the details of the project to our donors, alumni, and fans.'
UCLA Athletics, in conjunction with Barrett Sports Group, also recently conducted a comprehensive survey and hosted focus groups of men's basketball season ticket holders and Wooden Athletic Fund donors and the valuable insight gained from this survey will be incorporated into the next stage of the design process. Barrett Sports Group is based in Manhattan Beach, CA, and conducts financial and economic studies for numerous professional and collegiate properties.
Among the many enhancements that will be further examined in the pre-schematic phase are a new retractable seating system to bring spectators closer to the court, new concession areas, restrooms and modern arena technology to enhance fan experience; new and expanded athletic facilities for student-athletes; medical treatment and media rooms; a main lobby that would serve as a central entrance and celebrate UCLA's illustrious athletic tradition, and redevelopment of the area between Spaulding Field and the arena.
Since opening in 1965, Pauley Pavilion has served as the home court for championship basketball, volleyball and gymnastics teams; hosted renowned entertainers; welcomed the world during the 1984 Olympics; hosted a 1988 presidential debate, and staged commencement ceremonies for thousands of UCLA alumni. The arena was made possible by the generosity of Edwin and Barbara Pauley and a group of donors who matched the Pauley family gift.
