AROUND THE LEAGUE: CALIFORNIA (2-0-0, 7-2-1), SAN DIEGO STATE (1-0-0, 5-2-2) and STANFORD (1-0-1, 4-2-4) all came away from the first weekend of Pac-10 play unblemished ... All three were the host teams last weekend, but now Cal and Stanford must take to the road, while the Aztecs will complete their three-game homestand against the Bears and Cardinal ... The Cal-San Diego State matchup Fri., Oct. 12 should be a stellar one as both teams are coming in with six-game unbeaten streaks ... The Bears will be looking for some revenge as the Aztecs took both contests in 2006, outscoring them 5-1 through two games ... It should be a solid defensive game as Cal SO GK Stefan Frei and SDSU FR GK Brad Byrns are two of the best keepers in the nation, ranking 13th and 14th respectively in goals against average ... Byrns, who has five shutouts in the last six games, was named to the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer National Teams of the Week (for Oct. 8) ... OREGON STATE (0-2-0, 3-7-0) will look to get its first win in Conference play when it heads north to take on WASHINGTON (0-1-1, 5-4-2), which is also looking to get in the Pac-10 win column ... The Huskies earned a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Stanford on Sunday, after falling to Cal, 2-1, on Friday ... UW has now played to overtime three times in the last four matches, posting a 1-1-1 record in those games ... The Beavers were shutout on their Bay Area road trip, suffering 4-0 and 3-0 losses to Cal and Stanford, respectively ... Stanford SR GK Andrew Kartunen played all 110 minutes to record his fourth shutout of the year in the tie against Washington ... He recorded two saves on nine Husky shots and made some impressive plays on crosses to knock the ball away and prevent shots ... UCLA (0-1-0, 4-5-1) picked up a 1-0 non-conference win over San Diego on Tuesday, but fell to San Diego State on Saturday, 1-0 ... SO F David Estrada netted the game-winner against San Diego, which was just his second game back from a fractured metatarsal that kept him out of the first seven games of the season ... The Bruins return home for an important homestand this weekend ... The Pac-10 currently has five teams in the national rankings, with Cal coming in the highest at No. 8 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll ... Following the Bears are UCLA (No. 17), Stanford (No. 21), Washington (No. 28) and San Diego State (No. 31) in the same national poll ... Through the bulk of non-conference play, the Pac-10 is 24-16-8 (.583), with the next game outside of league action on Thurs., Nov. 1 when Loyola Marymount plays at Oregon State.
