Men's Tennis Competes In Wilson/ITA Regional
Oct. 12, 2007
BERKELEY - The California men's tennis team begins play today in the 2007 Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle, Wash. Hosted by the University of Washington, the tournament will consist of a 70-player singles draw and 32-team doubles draw. Three opening 'play-in' singles matches will whittle the singles field down to 64. A 32-player singles consolation draw will be held only for those players losing their first round match.
The two singles finalists and the doubles champions will earn automatic bids into the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, held in Columbus, Ohio in November. The ITA National Indoors is the second of college tennis' three majors and the most difficult to gain entry into due to a small field of 32 singles entrants and 16 doubles entrants.
The Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships are one of nine Regional tournaments taking place over the next two weeks. The Northwest Region will be the first of the nine to crown champions. Participating teams include Cal, Gonzaga, Nevada, Oregon, Portland, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Stanford, UC Davis and host Washington.
In 2006, senior Pierre Mouillon and doubles partner then-senior Daniel Sebescen captured the doubles title at the Northwest Regionals. The duo knocked off Paul Morrissey and Blake Muller of Stanford, 8-3, at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium on the Stanford campus, gaining automatic entry into last years' Indoor Championships.
