Six Huskies Advance on First Day of Wilson/ITA Northwest Regionals
Oct. 12, 2007
SEATTLE - Six Huskies advanced in singles on the first day of action at the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships hosted by UW at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The tournament, which runs through Tuesday, packed in 44 singles and doubles matches in just over 12 hours of tennis, whittling the field to 32 singles players and 26 doubles teams.
Of the 12 teams in attendance, Washington is tied for the most singles players remaining (six) with California. Stanford has four players still alive and Oregon has three, giving the four Pac-10 teams in attendance 19 out of the 32 surviving singles players.
The Huskies played an unfriendly host as the team went a combined 8-2 on Friday. Freshman Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (Chennai, India) earned a straight-set win in his home debut, defeating Matt Jagiello of UC Davis. The third-seeded Nedunchezhiyan is the top-seeded Husky in the draw, and the only Husky ranked in the preseason ITA polls (No. 106).
Senior Andy Kuharszky (Budapest, Hungary) and junior Patrik Fischer (Huttwil, Bern, Switzerland) each made short work of their first round opponents, neither losing more than two games in a set. Also advancing for Washington was sophomore Derek Drabble (Johannesburg, South Africa), and freshman Tobias Obenaus (Waidhofen, Austria). Junior Ryo Sekiguchi (Tokyo, Japan), a transfer from San Diego, had to win twice to join his teammates in the Round of 32. Sekiguchi played one of six 'play-in' matches needed to make the field an even 64 and won in straight sets. He then knocked off Portland's Bryan Thorp, 6-1, 6-4, in the 'first round', but second for him.
Seeded players went an unblemished 16-for-16 in singles play today. Top-seeded Pierre Mouillon of California (ranked 14th in the nation) rolled, 6-1, 6-1, in his first match over Jeff Emerson of Saint Mary's, while No. 2 Richard Wire of Stanford (48th nationally) was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Portland's Evan Schleining on the other side of the bracket.
Saturday's schedule includes the Round of 32 for singles and completion of the first round of doubles, of which six matches were played first thing this morning. Consolation singles matches for first round losers will also take place.
The two singles finalists and the doubles champion of the Northwest Regional advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships, the second of three majors in collegiate tennis. The National Indoor Championships feature the smallest field of the three, only 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams qualify for the event, held the first week of November in Columbus, Ohio.
