Stanford goes 5-2 in opening round play at the ITA Regional Championships

Seattle, WA - Cardinal singles players won five matches and lost two today while the three doubles teams had yet to play on the opening day of the ITA Regional Championship tournament at the University of Washington's Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle. Stanford was led by second seeded sophomore Richard Wire's defeat of Portland's Evan Schleining 6-4, 6-2, and ninth seeded junior Blake Muller, who cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Dan Elefant of UC Davis in the round of 64.
Sophomore Kevin Kaiser joins Muller and Wire in the round of 32 after a comeback win over Mitch Del Rosario from the University of San Francisco 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Also moving on is freshman Ted Kelly, who in his first match wearing the Cardinal beat Portland's Dillon Pottish 7-5, 6-4.
In the round of 128 freshman Greg Hirshman handled Roman Dojack of Gonzaga 6-1, 6-2 before losing to ninth seeded Kiryl Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State later that day. Junior Jeff Zeller lost his opening round match to David Chu of Washington 6-2,6-0.
The ITA Regional Championships is the opening tournament for all but Wire, Bruch and Muller, who are fresh off tournament play at the All-American Championships in Tulsa. The ITA Regional Championships stretches from today until its conclusion Tuesday, October 16.
