Cal Men Take Third at Pre-NCAA Meet

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The California men's cross country team took third with 157 points Saturday at the Pre-NCAA meet held at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Four Golden Bears from the men's team finished in the top 30. The Cal women finished 30th with 792 points.

'We were pleased with both sides today,' head coach Tony Sandoval said. 'Our men's team made a statement today that they are not a team of potential but a force to be reckoned with. Our women ran hard and showed well. Our younger runners got some good experience.'

Northern Arizona won the men's 8K team crown with 124 points. Iona took second (136 points), followed Cal, Virginia (203) and Alabama (207).

Senior David Torrence paced the Bears, taking 16th place with a time of 23:39. The other three top runners were sophomore Michael Coe and juniors Mark Matusak and Yosef Ghebray. Coe took 17th, touring the course in 23:40. Ghebray and Matusak finished in 23rd and 27th, respectively.

Lopez Lomong (Northern Arizona) and Robert Curtis (Villanova) finished first and second, respectively, in 23:02 and 23:09.

Stanford won the women's 6K title with 102 points, while Florida State was second with 123 points and Michigan State was third with 178 points.

Senior Rebecca Yau led the Bears by placing 83rd in a time of 21:31. Cal freshman Chelsea Reilly took 139th place (22:07).

Florida State's Susan Kuijken claimed the individual 6K title in a time of 19:56, with Teresa McWalters from Stanford following in second at 20:01.

Cal has next week off as it prepares for the Pac-10 championships on Oct. 27.
