Round of 16 Set at Wilson/ITA Northwest Regionals

Oct. 13, 2007

SEATTLE - Four Huskies rolled into the Round of 16 today during day two of the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships at Nordstrom Tennis Center. Washington's three seeded players--No. 3 Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, No. 4 Andy Kuharszky, and No. 5-8 Patrik Fischer--and unseeded Tobi Obenaus all picked up wins to move on.

The tournament became instantly very wide open when Stanford freshman Ted Kelly ousted No. 1-seed and 14th-ranked Pierre Mouillon of Cal in three sets. After seeded players were a perfect 16-of-16 on opening day, upsets started creeping into the picture on Saturday. In addition to Mouillon going down, three other seeded players were sent packing. Freshman Obenaus played the best match of his young Husky career, upsetting No. 9-16 Thong Tu of San Francisco easily, 6-2, 6-1. However, second-seeded Richard Wire of Stanford had no such trouble in his match, bageling Oregon's Ric Mortera, 6-0, 6-0.

Nedunchezhiyan, a freshman, the senior Kuharszky, and junior Fischer all secured straight-set victories for Washington. Unfortunately, one of the day's best matches was ended prematurely, when sophomore Derek Drabble suffered an ankle injury and was forced to retire at 4-4 in the third set with seeded Stanford player Blake Muller. Junior Ryo Sekiguchi also bowed out today, defeated by Kiryl Harbatsiuk of Sacramento State.

The first round of doubles play concluded with 10 matches on Saturday, after getting the first six in on Friday. Three Husky doubles teams moved through into the Round of 16, including the fourth-seeded team of Drabble and Nedunchezhiyan, who defeated a team from UC Davis, 8-3, this afternoon.

Sunday's schedule includes the Round of 16 for singles and doubles as well as consolation singles. Four matches will pit seeded singles players head-to-head.

The two singles finalists and the doubles champion of the Northwest Regional advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships, the second of three majors in collegiate tennis. The National Indoor Championships feature the smallest field of the three, only 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams qualify for the event, held the first week of November in Columbus, Ohio.
