Arizona State Defeats Cougar Soccer in Overtime

TEMPE, Ariz. - Alexandra Elston's goal off a free kick in overtime gave Arizona State a 1-0 victory over visiting Washington State in Pacific-10 women's soccer, Sunday.
The win improved Arizona State to 8-5-0, 2-0-0 in the Pac-10 while the No. 25 (Soccer America)/No. 27 (Soccer Buzz) Cougars dropped to 8-2-2, 1-1-0. The loss snapped Washington State's four-match unbeaten streak.
Elston's tally came at 94:28 and gave the Sun Devils their sixth straight win over the Cougars. Washington State lost a Pac-10 match in overtime for the first time since a 2-1 setback at Arizona State Oct. 10, 2004.
The match was physical throughout with 30 fouls called. Washington State committed 18 fouls, its most in a Pac-10 match since 19 at California in a 0-0 double-overtime tie Oct. 31, 2003.
The Cougars outshot the Sun Devils 3-2 in the first half with neither team firing at the net in the last 15 minutes of the period. WSU took three shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half, two by Brooke Bemis and the other by Allison Scurich. At 68:12, Carla Scanniello's header was high, the Sun Devils' first shot since 15:10.
Both WSU's Brynn Bemis and Arizona State's Briana Silvestri made saves in the 81st minute. The Cougars' Kiersten Dallstream and Elysse Van Leer had shots miss the mark in the 84th and 89th minute, respectively.
In overtime, Brynn Bemis notched her fifth save when she stopped Alissa Oldenkamp 13 seconds into the extra session.
Washington State travels to Seattle for a 7:30 p.m. match at Washington Friday, Oct. 19.
