No. 6 USC Rolls On, Tops Oregon State 5-0
Oct. 14, 2007
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 6 USC women's soccer team spread the wealth on Sunday afternoon at McAlister Field, as five different players scored for the Trojans in a 5-0 win over visiting Oregon State. USC's second Pac-10 win of the year runs the Trojans' win streak up to six straight, bumping USC's overall record to 10-1-1 and Pac-10 mark to 2-0. The Trojans also hold an eight-game unbeaten streak. Oregon State is now 7-5-1, 0-2.
After peppering the goal box with corner kicks early in the game, USC broke through with a smooth offensive series in the 23rd minute. Amy Rodriguez got the ball out wide to Ashli Sandoval, who sent in a centering pass that arced perfectly for Megan Ohai to run on and drive a strong header crosscage to the left for a 1-0 USC lead at 22:04. That goal would stand as the game-winner, giving the freshman a team-high six goals and three game-winning goals on the year. The Trojan offense generated a whopping 27 shots in the game, delivering 14 in the first half and 13 in the second to out-shoot the Beavers 27-7 in the game. The 27-shot effort is a season high for the Trojans, as is the 14 points generated in the 5-0 win - also USC's biggest victory of the year.
USC goalkeeper Kristin Olsen had a couple tests in the first half, pulling down a long OSU free kick and then making a diving stop on a Jessica Valenzuela strike after the Beaver player got past the USC defensive line. The Women of Troy turned that stop into a counterattack, switching fields and getting deep in OSU territory to earn another corner kick. Ashley Nick lined up for the corner and sent in a good ball that was knocked around and came close to crossing the line. Oregon State's Courtney Wetzel was called for a handball and subsequently received a red card, leaving Oregon State a player down the rest of the way. Amy Rodriguez lined up for the penalty kick, only to have OSU goalkeeper Caitlin Seeley anticipate the strike and make a save to her left.
The momentum USC had built in the first half kept building in the second. On the opening kickoff, Ashley Nick took the ball straight to goal and slipped a low shot to the right to give USC a 2-0 lead just 30 seconds into the second half. Fifteen minutes later, the Trojans would make another surge, scoring twice in just over a minute to put the Beavers well out of reach. At 59:36, Lauren Brown finished off a quick series for the senior's 11th career goal. Rodriguez slipped theball to Marihelen Tomer at the top of the box, and Tomer deflected the pass to Brown on the right side. Brown rocketed in the goal to climb to No. 13 all-time at USC in career goals. A minute later, USC was again causing trouble for the Beaver defense. This time, Tomer blasted a shot on goal that was saved but stayed loose, and Rodriguez promptly drilled in her fourth goal of the year - 16th of her career - to lift USC to a 4-0 lead with 30 minutes still to play.
In the 65th minute of action, Janessa Currier made it a two-goal weekend for herself, as the launched a strike from 25 yards out that ripped into the goal to get USC ahead 5-0. Currier had delivered the game-winner in Friday's 1-0 win over Oregon to open Pac-10 play for the Trojans.
Now with six goals in Pac-10 play, USC has almost reached its Pac-10 total from 2006. USC scored eight goals during Pac-10 play, thanks to a series of four scoreless ties. Goalkeeper Kristin Olsen has been the goalie of record for all of USC's games this season, sharing in all eight of USC's shutouts this year and holding six solo shutouts. Today against Oregon State, Olsen was relieved in the 65th minute by Brittany Massro, who helped finish off the Beavers by adding a save in USC's eighth shutout of 2007.
The Trojans continue Pac-10 play with a trip next week to the Bay Area. USC first faces California at 3:30 p.m. on Friday (Oct. 19) in Berkeley, and then play Stanford at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 21) in Palo Alto.
