UW Women Shut Out Arizona in Pac-10 Soccer
Oct. 14, 2007
TUCSON, Ariz. - Senior Shuree Hyatt scored an early goal and senior Robin Alexander added a second-half tally Sunday, lifting the Washington women's soccer team to a 2-0 victory over Arizona at Murphey Stadium.
The Huskies (4-8), evened their Pacific-10 Conference record at 1-1. UW rebounded from a 3-0 loss on Friday at Arizona State with their first road win against the Wildcats since 2000.
'We were much more united in our effort today,' exclaimed UW coach Lesle Gallimore. 'We were really disappointed in ourselves after Friday night. Nobody played horribly, but we didn't really play together like we needed to. Today it was a much better collective effort.'
UW won despite being out shot 15-11 by the Wildcats. Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Carr (Culver City, Calif.) registered six saves for the Huskies en route to her second shutout.
Hyatt (Kent, Wash./Kentlake) opened the scoring with her team-leading fourth goal. She ran on to a through pass from junior Jenna Robison (Livermore, Calif) and dribbled past one defender, setting up a one-on-one situation with Wildcat goalkeeper Danielle Nicolai. Hyatt beat Nicolai and slotted a shot into the goal at 14:01.
Arizona registered a 9-4 advantage in shots during the second half, but the only attempt that found the back of the net was by a Husky. Alexander (Broomfield, Colo.) maneuvered around a defender and launched a strike into the upper right corner at 61:22 for her first career goal.
'It's all about finishing opportunities,' Gallimore said. 'We finished our chances and we took better shots. A lot of their shots were from outside over the top and we were happy to give that up and be able to defend better on the ground.'
Arizona (5-8) dropped to 0-2 in Pac-10 play, losing to the Huskies for the third time in their last four meetings.
Nicolai was credited with six saves for the Wildcats.
'Clearly you would like to come away with two wins, but any time in the Pac-10 you can go on the road and split you have to be happy with the team,' added Gallimore. 'We're looking forward to coming home for three games, starting with the Cougars on Friday.'
The Washington women host their conference home opener, Friday, Oct. 19 against Washington State. Kick-off is 7:30 p.m. at Husky Soccer Field.
