Cal Men's Tennis Continues To Roll At Wilson/ITA Regional Tournament

Oct. 15, 2007

SEATTLE, Wash. - California's men's tennis team continued its strong play through three days at the 2007 Wilson/ITA Regional Tournament at the Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Golden Bears landed all four doubles teams in Monday's quarterfinals, setting up a possible all-Cal semifinal should all four duos win their matches. In singles play, sophomore Kallim Stewart won in straight sets again to advance to the quarterfinal. Joining Stewart in the round of eight are freshmen Bozhidar Katsarov and Pedro Zerbini.

In the singles round of 16, freshman Jonathan Dahan was the unfortunate victim of a comeback victory by Sacramento State's Kiryl Harbatsiuk. Dahan took the first set with a narrow 7-6 win but Harbatsiuk returned with two strong sets winning each by a score of 6-2. Facing Stanford's Richard Wire, senior Ken Nakahara lost in straight sets 6-0, 6-2. Katsarov defeated Stanford's Blake Muller 6-3, 6-3 in straight sets to advance to the quarterfinal while fellow freshman Pedro Zerbini took all three sets, but emerged with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 victory over Nevada's Laurent Garcin. Stewart continued to shine, winning 6-4, 6-3 against Washington's Patrik Fischer. In singles play, Stewart has only played the necessary six sets to advance to his current position, defeating each of his opponents in straight sets.

In doubles play, the duo of freshman Zach Gilbert and senior Ken Nakahara advanced after playing a short match that ended in an injury withdrawal against Washington's Derek Drabble and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan. Junior Geoff Chizever and freshman Pedro Zerbini had the easiest time in their round of 16 match, taking an 8-1 decision against Washington's Martin Kildahl and Andy Kuharszky into the quarterfinal. The longest doubles match for the Bears was eventually won 9-8 by Katsarov and Stewart, rounding out the doubles quarterfinal field with four Cal pairs.

Play continues on Monday with doubles quarterfinal matches taking place at 10 and 11 a.m. and singles quarterfinals beginning at noon. The singles semifinal will begin shortly after 3 p.m. to determine Tuesday's final and the right to advance to directly to the ITA National Indoor Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
