Kuharszky Wins Twice to Reach Wilson/ITA Regional Final

Oct. 15, 2007

SEATTLE - The singles final is set at the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships. At the conclusion of the fourth day of play at the Nordstrom Tennis Center, Washington senior Andy Kuharszky and Stanford sophomore Richard Wire prevailed in their semifinal matches to set up an anticipated Tuesday showdown.

Kuharszky, the tournament's fourth seed, had to stand up to a pair of very talented freshmen from Cal in his two matches. First, in the morning quarterfinal, Kuharszky came through, 6-4, 6-4, against No. 9-16-seed Pedro Zerbini. Experience paid off once again in the semi, as Kuharszky held off unseeded freshman Bozhidar Katsarov, 6-2, 7-6. Katsarov had reached the semifinals by defeating UW freshman Tobi Obenaus, 6-0, 6-1. In the semi, Kuharszky was up a set and 4-1 before Katsarov won three straight games to even the set. The Golden Bear rookie then broke again to serve for the set at 6-5, but Kuharszky broke back at love with four clean winners. He then rolled to a 7-2 tiebreak win.

Wire, the No. 2 seed and 48th-ranked player in the nation, showed his varied game in two solid wins. The Cardinal sophomore defeated Cal sophomore Kallim Stewart, 6-4, 6-4, in the quarters, and then took care of Sacramento State's Kiryl Harbatsiuk, 6-2, 6-4 to reach the final. Neither Wire nor Kuharszky have lost a set in the tournament.

The doubles semifinals will be an exclusively Bay Area affair, as a Stanford team will face a California team in each semi on Tuesday. Top-seeds Ted Kelly and Blake Muller of Stanford advanced with an 8-5 win. The final Husky pair, Obenaus and junior Patrik Fischer, lost 8-4 to Cal's Jonathan Dahan and Pierre Mouillon.

Husky junior David Chu continued to march through the consolation singles bracket with two wins today to reach the final. He will face Xavier Barajas-Smith in the final on Tuesday.

Tuesday's final day of play will begin with the doubles semifinals and the consolation singles final at 9:30 a.m. The main draw singles final between Kuharszky and Wire is scheduled for 11:30 a.m., with the doubles final to follow immediately after.

The two singles finalists (Kuharszky and Wire) and the doubles champion (to be determined) of the Northwest Regional advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships, the second of three majors in collegiate tennis. The National Indoor Championships feature the smallest field of the three, only 32 singles players and 16 doubles teams qualify for the event, held the first week of November in Columbus, Ohio.
