Soni Nominated For USA Swimming Golden Goggle Award

USC junior Rebecca Soni, a two-time NCAA title winner in the 200y breast, was nominated for Breakout Performer of the Year and former Trojan All-American Mark Warkentin was nominated for the Perseverance Award as USA Swimming released the nominations on Monday (Oct. 15) for the 2007 Golden Goggle Awards, a red carpet event celebrating the accomplishments of top American swimmers in 2007.

Soni's 2007 including U.S. national titles in the 100m and 200m breast at the 2007 U.S. Summer Nationals. Weeks later at the Japan International, the final major international meet of the 2007 season, Soni posted a pair of seconds in the 100m (1:06.15) and 200m breast (2:23.26), both personal bests. She became only the sixth woman ever to go under 1:07 in the 100m breast. Earlier in the season, she represented the U.S. against Australia at the Duel in the Pool.

Warkentin was fourth in the 25K at the 2007 Open Water World Championships, 17th in the 5K and 20th in the 10K. He also won the 25K at the 2007 Open Water Nationals.
