Stanford Softball Opens Fall Play Thursday

Stanford, Calif. - Fans can get a preview of the 2008 Stanford softball team in the coming weeks, as the squad hosts three exhibition contests at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium.
Play begins this Thursday against San Jose State, when the Cardinal takes on the Spartans in a 4 p.m. contest. On Sunday, Nov. 4, Stanford will play a double-header beginning at 10 a.m. against Santa Clara and Chico State. Admission is free to all three games.
The Cardinal returns 11 letterwinners from last season's team that went 35-21-1 and advanced to the NCAA Regional Final. Included in the returnees are 2007 All-American Alissa Haber, 2005 All-American Michelle Smith and two-time All-Pac-10 picks Missy Penna and Maddy Coon. Head Coach John Rittman, who begins his 12th season on the Farm, has also added five promising newcomers, infielder Melisa Koutz (Valencia, Calif.), catcher Brittany Minder (Moreno Valley, Calif.), pitcher Ashley Chinn (Belmont, Calif.), infielder Erikka Moreno (Villa Park, Calif.) and outfielder Autumn Albers (Danville, Calif.).
Stanford officially opens the 2008 season at the University of San Diego Tournament on Friday, Feb. 8 against San Diego.
