Stanford sends three singles, one doubles team to Berkeley for the Chandler Cup

The Cardinal men's tennis team will travel to Berkeley tomorrow for the Chandler Cup hosted by Cal at the Hellman Tennis Complex. Stanford will send senior Phil Kao, sophomore Kevin Kaiser and freshman Greg Hirschman to compete in the A flight singles draw of 32 players while Kaiser along with Hirshman will team up to compete in the A flight with 16 doubles teams.
Hirshaman will open at 9:15 a.m. against Saint Mary's Joel Kusnierz, the fifth seeded junior from Saint Mary's who has yet to play this year. At 10:45 Kaiser will face Pacific's David Gonzalez, who owns a 1-3 record on the year. Kao will be the final Cardinal singles player to take the court when he plays's UC Santa Cruz's Bryan Pybas at 12:15. In doubles, Hirsham and Kaiser will start the Cardinal day with an 8 a.m. match against Loyola Marymount's Jacek Twarowski and Stefan Nikolic.
The tournament will feature top players from Cal, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Loyola-Marymount, Nevada-Reno, Pacific, Saint Mary's, San Francisco, Sonoma State, UC Davis, UC San Diego, UC Santa Cruz and Washington. There will be a consolation tournament for first round losers only.
Hirshman is coming off a solid performance in his opening tournament, the ITA Regional Championships, where he went 3-2. The San Diego native lost in the round of 64 of the main draw but advanced into the consolation quarterfinals before succumbing to Xavier Barajas-Smith of Sacramento State.
Kaiser advanced to the round of 32 in the ITA Regional Championships, his first tournament of the year. The sophomore from Saratoga beat Mitch Del Rosario of San Francisco 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 64 before losing to Kallim Stewart of Cal in a tight 7-6, 7-5 match.
The Chandler Cup begins the season for Kao. The senior from Cupertino lost in his only match last year to Derek Drabble of Washington 6-1, 7-6(2), 6-3 at the ITA Northwest Regional.
Hirshman and Kaiser will team up for the first time in their careers, but both played doubles at the ITA Regional Championships two weeks ago. Hirshman and sophomore Richard Wire advanced to the finals and Kaiser played with junior Jeff Zeller and advanced into the quarterfinals before falling.
