Cougars and Ducks Battle to Draw in Soccer
Oct. 26, 2007
PULLMAN, Wash. - Senior Brooke Bemis scored off a corner kick in the 85th minute to rally Washington State to a 1-1 tie with Oregon in a Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer match Friday at Lower Soccer Field.
The Bemis tally, her seventh of the season, came from six yards out in the center of the box after redshirt-freshman Mallory Fox served the ball in from the left side.
'The ball went in off my hip,' Bemis said. 'I've scored like that before. I was just trying to push my body toward the goal.'
The tie moved the Cougars' record to 9-2-3, 2-1-1 Pac-10 while Oregon is 8-6-2, 1-2-2. Washington State stretched its unbeaten streak at home to five matches dating back to last season.
'It was a hard fought game, a grind it out match among rivals,' Cougar Head Coach Matt Potter said. 'The quality chances to score were few and far between. Both teams played hard and it came down to mistakes. We are not happy with the goal we gave up and I am sure Oregon is not pleased with the goal we scored.
Oregon struck first at 19:11 when Tiffany Smith converted for her fifth goal of the season following a wild sequence in front of the Cougar net. Washington State goalkeeper Brynn Bemis and defender Jenny Christoph were on the ground just in front of the left post when Barbara Blocker fired a shot that Bemis saved. The rebound came to Smith whose low liner was also stopped by Bemis, but not controlled. Smith again came up with the loose ball and this time lifted a shot over Bemis for a 1-0 lead.
Washington State nearly netted the equalizer less than a minute later when sophomore Carly Dobratz's shot beat Oregon goalkeeper Jessie Chatfield, but Dani Oster was there for the Ducks to clear the ball off the line and preserve Oregon's one-goal lead.
The Cougars, who outshot the Ducks 23-12, including 9-1 in overtime, had the best scoring opportunity in the extra sessions when a Fox shot hit the crossbar just over two minutes into the second overtime.
Washington State closes out the weekend with a home match against Oregon State Sunday at noon.
