Soni Wins Twice, Waller Once At SMU Classic

Oct. 26, 2007

Junior Rebecca Soni won the 100y breast and the 400y IM while junior Rachael Waller won the 200y free for the No. 15 USC women's swim team, which is in third place after the first session of the two-day SMU Classic, hosted by the SMU Mustangs on Friday (Oct. 26) in Dallas.

In a meet in which each school is allowed eight swimmers, with one swimmer allowed to participate in each heat (two heats per event), USC is third with 135.5 points. Texas A&M is in first (172) and is followed by SMU (154), USC, Florida State (126), Wisconsin (121.5) and Alabama (119).

USC opened the meet with three straight wins, led off by the quartet of junior Kristen Lahey, Soni, senior Emily Goetsch and Waller taking first in the 400y medley relay with an NCAA consideration time of 3:43.53.

Soni then won the 400y IM in an NCAA consideration 4:18.09, less than a second a half off her best time of last season.

Next up Waller won the 200y free, lowering her previous NCAA consideration time to 1:48.81. That time is only .23 off her 2006-07 best.

Soni came back to win the 100y breast in 1:00.86, just off her season-best 1:00.81, already an NCAA automatic qualifying time.

Junior Katy Houston won the consolation final of the 100y breast in 1:03.37, a shade off her season best and NCAA consideration 1:03.26. Lahey also took second in the 100y back in 55.45.

The meet concludes Saturday (Oct. 27), starting at 7:30 p.m. CST.
