Cougars Debut 2007-08 Squad at Scrimmage
Oct. 27, 2007
PULLMAN, Wash. - Nearly 1,500 fans showed up to get their first glance of the Washington State University men's basketball squad at the team's scrimmage held in a standing-room only Bohler Gym, Saturday.
The format included three 11-minute scrimmages with a shifting in the teams prior to each game. The first game pit the more experienced players wearing gray against the less-experienced Crimson squad, resulting in a 21-12 win for Gray. Gray won all three games (21-12, 19-14, 20-6), as the second scrimmage consisted of evenly split squads and the third put the experienced backcourt with a less experience frontcourt, and vice-versa.
Quotes from the scrimmage:
Head Coach Tony Bennett
'I thought the guys showed glimpses of what they're capable of, individual guys at times did some nice things. As they got fatigued you saw some sloppy play with turnovers. Our way to have a nice ball club is unity and collectiveness, to me those are our strengths. There was some good and definitely some areas that we need to address and continue to improve on.'
Senior Derrick Low
On the turnout...
'I thought it was amazing. I know there's a football game, but just to see how much people are excited for the basketball season is great. I thought we all had fun and the crowd had a good time too. I think it just showed the crowd a little of what to expect this season.'
Senior Robbie Cowgill
On the turnout...
'That was pretty neat. It was pretty cool to see that place pretty much packed, people standing up and cheering. Even for just a scrimmage, it's fun. You like to have that king of excitement around the program.'
Senior Kyle Weaver
On the scrimmage...
'I felt pretty good. I think we did a good job of trying to get on the same page. It's our first time getting up and down in that setting, a scrimmage setting with officials and everything like that. I think guys are starting to get a feel for how the game is. I think we all know it'll be a lot more competitive once we start Pac-10 play and get a chance to play against some other teams, but it was good to get out there today.'
