Oct. 27, 2007
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Stanford Cardinal women's cross country team won their 12th-straight conference title (14 overall) today, Oct. 27, at the 2007 Pac-10 Cross Country Championships at Trysting Tree Golf Course hosted by Oregon State, while the Oregon Ducks men's squad captured their second consecutive title making for 15 Pac-10 victories.
No. 1 Oregon edged No. 15 Stanford convincingly with 39 points to the Cardinal's 55. Following Stanford was No. 8 California with 70 points. The champion Ducks placed six runners in the top 15 and a seventh runner finished 21st. The No. 1 Stanford women boasted the top two finishers and three top 10 finishers to take the championship over No. 2 Oregon as the Cardinal registered 48 points to the Ducks 64. No. 5 Arizona State and No. 9 Washington were in a close third tying with 68 points.
Oregon junior Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott (Eldoret, Kenya) earned his first Pac-10 cross country title to lead the Ducks to victory, covering the 8,000 meter course in 22:54.9 on a mild, calm, sunny day in the Willamette Valley. Kiptoo-Biwott was followed by fellow teammate and defending champion, junior Galen Rupp (Portland, Ore.) in second with a time of 22:58.4. Rounding out the top three was Stanford senior Russell Brown (Hanover, N.H.) running the course in 23:08.7.
'Winning the conference meet is always a proud moment for us. This is a great conference and a great team,' Oregon head cross country coach Vin Lananna said. 'I am proud of what we have accomplished and I am really anxious to see what happens in the future.'
'I got excited at the end. I was kind of hoping we (Kiptoo-Biwott and Rupp) could just run all the way, Kiptoo-Biwott said. 'But I got excited at the finish line. Sometimes it happens like that.
We're going to go back home and we have a lot of things to do. We have to train a lot and we get ourselves ready because we still have two big races coming up.'
In the women's 6,000 meter race Stanford senior Arianna Lambie (Harvard, Mass.) earned her third consecutive Pac-10 title by posting a blistering time of 19:40.7. Finishing in second less than a second behind Lambie was fellow Cardinal senior Teresa McWalters (San Francisco, Calif.) covering the course in 19:41.1. Oregon freshman Alexandra Kosinksi (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) wrapped up the top three finishing in 19:54.1.
'We had two runners up front,? Stanford head cross country coach Peter Tegen said. 'We had our No. 3 and four runners out that created some difficulties today, but we came through and the ladies did a wonderful job overall. I very am pleased with our performance.'
'Our goal was to run together the whole time,' Lambie said. 'We (Lambie and McWalters) were just feeding off each other throughout the race. We knew we would be together. We also knew that there would be other great competitors. We were trying to use our power. We had run pretty hard to out run all the competitors.'
Runners competed on a 2,700 meter loop around Trysting Tree Golf Course with the start and finish line just off the highway that enters Corvallis near Oregon State's rowing facilities. The men ran two and a half loops and the women ran just over two loops.
Pac-10 men's and women's cross country will be back in competition in two weeks in Eugene, Ore. at the NCAA West Regional, Saturday, Nov. 10.
