No. 8 Cal Men Take Third at Pac-10 Championships

Oct. 27, 2007

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The No. 8 California men's cross country team took third with 70 points Saturday at the Pac-10 Championships, held at the Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore. Three Golden Bears finished in the top 10 to earn the third-place finish. The Cal men have finished in the top three in every meet so far this season. The Cal women finished ninth with 237 points.

'It was a pretty good performance by our men's team,' head coach Tony Sandoval said. 'This was more of a realistic race for us than the Pre-NCAA meet. Yosef (Ghebray) and Mark (Matusak) really stepped up for us, and Kari (Karlsson) was sold once again.'

Top-ranked Oregon won the men's 8K team crown with 39 points. Following the Ducks was No. 15 Stanford in second with 55 points. After Cal, No. 19 UCLA came in fourth and No. 25 Arizona State took fifth.

Junior Yosef Ghebray paced the Bears for the first time this season, placing seventh at 23:14. After Ghebray, the other top-10 Cal runners were junior Mark Matusak and senior David Torrence. Matusak took 8th, touring the course in 23:16, while Torrence finished right behind Matusak in ninth at 23:17. Sophomore Michael Coe crossed the finish line at 23:28 (16th).

Shadrack Kiptoo-Biwott and Galen Rupp from Oregon finished first and second, respectively, in 22:54 and 22:58.

For the women, No. 1 Stanford won the women's 6K title with 48 points, while second-ranked Oregon was second with 64 points and No. 5 Arizona State and No. 9 Washington tied for third with 68 points.

Freshman Chelsea Reilly led the Bears by placing 28th in a time of 21:02. Senior Rebecca Yau had a tough day, touring the course in 22:27 to take 61st overall.

Stanford's Arianna Lambie claimed the individual 6K title in a time of 19:40, with her teammate Teresa McWalters following in second at 19:41.

Cal next travels to the NCAA West Regional Saturday, Nov. 10, at 11:00 a.m. in Eugene, Ore.
