Post Game Quotes from ASU 31-20 Victory Over Cal
Oct. 27, 2007
Arizona State Head Coach Dennis Erickson
On another comeback from a first quarter deficit:'It was not all that much fun in the first quarter, to be honest with you, but our guys believe. California is a heck of a football team, we all know that. They came out early against us and put some points on the board. I really felt we were going to be able to run it. They got a little tired there at the end. We made some big plays on both sides of the football. The two interceptions were key in the fourth quarter. What can I say? We just keep battling. Our offensive front did a heck of a job of protecting. They did a heck of a job of blocking the run, and those two running backs did a heck of a job. We got Brent Miller back in it. He made a couple catches and it was nice to see him.'
On QB Rudy Carpenter:
'I think early in the game they put a little pressure on him and he made a couple bad decisions. He knew that, and I think he was pressing a little bit early. That game a year ago had been on his mind, to get out of that deal. Finally, Coach Olson and actually my son Bryce, who's upstairs, settled him down pretty darn good. He came out and played really well in the second half. He didn't make any mistakes. We had the one turnover and that was it. You play against a team like Cal and only turn it over once, that's a pretty good night for you.'
On Dimitri Nance and Keegan Herring:
'They're two different types of runners. Keegan, he made one run in the fourth quarter, I don't know how he got out. I don't know. Dimitri just hit it up in there. That run for the touchdown on fourth down was an unbelievable run. Now we'll get Jarrell Woods involved some, just keep doing it. That's what we've got to be able to do, run the football, for us to be successful.'
On any changes put in for this game:
'We did put some things in. The one that we hit Dimitri on underneath was something we put in. Then, we hit Brent twice, and one was something we put in last week. It's nice to have him back. That makes a big difference. You're always going to add something. You just want to make sure you don't add too much and we didn't do that.'
On halftime adjustments:
'We didn't do anything, other than a few adjustments on both sides of the football. One thing about this team, when they go into halftime, they still believe. We played great defense in the second half, and we just kind of got the feel. They have a lot of weapons. We put JT [Justin Tryon] on [DeSean] Jackson the whole night one on one, and he did a heck of a job. We ran to the football extremely well. It was just a good day. Everything's kind of gone by me real fast on this one.'
On the crowd tonight:
'The crowd was unbelievable. I looked up there and you couldn't find an empty place, couldn't find an empty spot. That's we've got to have to take this program to one of the elite in the Pac-10. If we just fill that thing, get the fans, and the students obviously are unbelievable.'
Arizona State QB Rudy Carpenter
On winning against a ranked team:
'People will say Cal came in here with a two game losing streak. I don't think people realize how good Cal is. They are a good football team and they showed that in the first half. We played a good second half.'
On battling back in the second half:
'I think we did the same against Colorado, Oregon State, Washington State and even Washington, being down at halftime. We know how to deal with that adversity. We know how to come back and put it together. I think the most important thing is that coaches make good second half adjustments for us and give us a chance to exploit what is going on on defense. I think the majority of the props goes to the coaches for doing such a great job.'
Arizona State RB Dimitri Nance
On winning the game:
'It was great because they doubted us and we weren't getting a lot of respect. They didn't think we were going to win the game. It is a great feeling to have.'
On running into the end zone untouched:
'I was just trying to go down hill and I was just still on my feet. I found a hole and just went in there.'
On advice from Torain:
'[Torain said] just to step our game up. We had big shoes to fill and we had to step our game up.'
Arizona State WR Kyle Williams
On earning respect:
'We were number four on the BCS, but we really didn't get talked about that much. We just felt we had to go out there and prove ourselves against a good opponent like Cal and just come out there and play our hardest.'
On being down 13-0 in the first quarter:
'It was the same. We didn't sweat and we didn't panic. We knew we were going to win the game. Thirteen to nothing in the first quarter doesn't mean anything to us. It is what it is in the fourth quarter. We came back and played second half football like we were supposed to and we came back and won it.'
California Head Coach Jeff Tedford
'ASU is a good football team. They have a great defense and a physical offensive line. They did not turn the ball over and that is the key to winning games. They are a great football team.'
California LB Worrell Williams
On the win:
'This type of game hurts us. ASU has good athletes and we knew that coming into the game.'
