The Women of Troy Finish Fourth at the SMU Classic

The Women of Troy continued their winning ways on Saturday (Oct. 27) at the second session of the SMU Swimming and Diving Classic. The meet was hosted by Southern Methodist University in Dallas and was unique in that each team could only bring eight swimmers and have only one swimmer per heat. USC finished fourth overall in the meet with 259.5 points. Texas A&M came in first (330), followed by Southern Methodist University in second (306), Florida State University (267), USC, University of Wisconsin (258.5) and University of Alabama (233).
On Saturday Senior Whitney Hentzen came in fourth in the 500 yard freestyle with an NCAA consideration time of 4:53.31.
Junior Rachael Waller followed with a third place finish in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 51.21.
Senior Emily Goetsch also placed third in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:03.91.
Junior Rebecca Soni came up big for the Women of Troy with a Perkins Natatorium pool record in the 200 yard breaststroke with the NCAA qualifying time of 2:10.25. The previous pool record of 2:11.05 was set in 1998 by Kristy Kowal from the University of Georgia. Soni followed that up with a second place finish in the 200 yard IM with an NCAA consideration time of 2:03.26. Over the course of the two-day meet Soni finished first in the 400 yard IM, first in the 100 yard backstroke, first in the 200 yard breaststroke, second in the 200 yard IM and was a member of the winning 400 yard medley relay team. For her accomplishments she was named Swimmer of the Meet.
The Women of Troy will be back in action on November 9th at Arizona for a dual meet.
