Cardinal Defeats Gold 76-68 In Annual Intrasquad Game At Galen Center
Oct. 28, 2007
USC freshman O.J. Mayo scored a game-high 34 points to lead the Cardinal team to a 76-68 victory today (Oct. 28) in the annual Cardinal and Gold game held at the Galen Center. The Cardinal team rallied from a 44-40 halftime deficit to outscore the Gold team 36-24 in an abbreviated second half, called with 3:24 left in the game due to lack of players available.
Mayo's two free throws with 9:46 left in the game broke a 62-all tie and put the Cardinal team ahead for good. The Trojan freshman hit on 12 of 19 shots, including four of eight three pointers and went 6-for-6 from the line. Mayo also had six steals and four assists in the winning effort. Junior forward Keith Wilkinson also had a big game for the Cardinal team, scoring 14 points and grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Freshman point guard Angelo Johnson added 11 points and had five assists with no turnovers for the Cardinal team.
Sophomore Dwight Lewis and freshman Davon Jefferson led the Gold team with 18 points each. Also scoring in double-figures for the Gold team was sophomores Ryan Wetherell with 11 and Kyle Austin with 10.
USC started the game with only 12 players available due to sophomore guard Daniel Hackett being out with a broken jaw, freshman guard Marcus Simmons out with a sprained left ankle and junior RouSean Cromwell missing the game as he did not feel well. Three minutes into the game, sophomore forward Taj Gibson reaggrevated his sprained left ankle and when two players were experiencing cramps late in the game, it seemed like time to call it before USC was forced to play a 5-on-4 scrimmage.
The two teams combined to hit 57.9 percent from the field (55-for-95), including 55.2 percent from three-point range (16-for-29).
USC will open the season at home at the Galen Center on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. vs. Mercer.
