TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 18 California blanked Arizona, 2-0, Sunday afternoon at Murphey Stadium for its ninth shutout of the season. The Golden Bears improved to 10-5 and 2-3 in the Pac-10 with the weekend sweep, while the Wildcats dropped to 6-10-1 (1-4-1).
The teams entered halftime knotted at 0-0, but Cal grabbed the momentum in the second half with a goal by senior midfielder Caitlin Hannegan in the 62nd minute. Hannegan netted her third goal of the season and second game winner by converting a one-on-one opportunity with Arizona goalkeeper Halley Brown.
Junior midfielder/forward Nikki Schrey extended Cal's edge to 2-0 with another one-on-one opportunity in the 72nd minute. The goal was Schrey's second of the season.
Hannegan paced Cal with four shots, three on goal. The Bears were on target today, as seven of their nine shots were on goal. The Bears held the Wildcats to only three shots in the second half to close Arizona's shot advantage to 11-9 for the game.
Cal, which now is 11-0-2 all-time against Arizona, returns home to face Washington State Nov. 2 and Washington Nov. 4 in the Bears' final regular-season home stand.
