Cal Wins Singles And Doubles Titles At Chandler Cup
Oct. 28, 2007
BERKELEY - The California men's tennis concluded play at the 2007 Chandler Cup today. As host, competing against many of collegiate tennis' top players, the Golden Bears claimed the doubles title in Flight A's main draw with junior Geoff Chizever and freshman Pedro Zerbini taking a 9-7 victory against Washington early Sunday morning. In singles play, freshman Bozhidar Katsarov clinched the Flight A title with a straight-set victory after battling through a tough semifinal round. In B Flight singles, senior Ken Nakahara also rode a straight-set win to the B singles title.
In the Flight A main draw championship match, Katsarov defeated Nevada's Laurent Garcin in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. Opening the match up 3-1, Garcin pushed serve to gain the three-all tie before Katsarov got back on track to win the final three games of the first set. The second set ran on-serve until each player had three games a piece. Winning the first break point, Katsarov then held serve and broke Garcin once more before taking the second set 6-3 to claim his first collegiate tournament title as the Flight A main draw champion.
Facing Washington's Andy Kuharszky and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan in the Flight A doubles championship match, Chizever and Zerbini played from behind for much of the start. Down 3-6 at one point, the pair broke back to get to six-all. Falling behind again and down 6-7, love-40 on Zerbini's serve, the duo clawed all the way back by saving three match-points and won break point once more to tie the match at seven-all. Hitting well, the pair broke Kuharszky's serve to take an 8-7 lead, giving Chizever the serve for the match. The final game started out shaky with Cal going down love-30 and needing a strong effort to gain the advantage at 40-30. Washington's pair didn't let up towards the end, forcing several deuces before a big serve by Chizever put the match on ice; giving the Bears the Flight A doubles championship.
In the B Flight, senior team captain Ken Nakahara faced Washington's Ryo Sekiguchi in a match-up of No. 1-seed vs. No. 2 and won 6-4, 6-4. Nakahara was down three games to one before breaking back to four; and then held serve to win the first set. In the second, he won the early break and was up 5-3 before giving up a game on his serve. Nakahara regained form however in the final game, breaking to clinch the B Flight singles championship.
