Golfers Advance to Match Play Championship

The UCLA men's golf team won twice on Monday to advance to the finals of the Callaway Collegiate Match Play Championship at Reynolds Plantation in Greensboro, GA.

On Monday morning, the fourth-seeded Bruins completed their suspended match from Sunday afternoon by blanking 12th-seeded Tennessee, 5-0. James Lee, Jason Kang, Erik Flores, Philip Francis and Kevin Chappell were all winners with no matches going extra holes.

Later in the day UCLA rallied to defeat ninth-seeded Florida, 4-1. At one point, the Bruins were behind in four of the five matches. In fact, with two holes to play, freshman Philip Francis was down two to Florida's Tyler Brown. Francis won the next three holes to record a victory in 19 holes. Other winners against the Gators were Erik Flores, who defeated Billy Horschel, 3 & 1, James Lee, who defeated Manuel Villegas, 1-up, and Kevin Chappell, who defeated Arnold Vongvanij, 3 & 2. UCLA sophomore Jason Kang lost 1-up to Toby Ragland.

For the tournament, Francis and Chappell have each won all three of their matches. James Lee won twice on Monday and Flores has a record of 2-0-1 in three matches.
