Allen Named Pac-10 Player of the Week
Oct. 30, 2007
WALNUT CREEK, Calif.-- Washington senior forward Ely Allen has been named the Pac-10 Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 23-29, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Allen, from Kent, Wash., scored his conference-leading eighth goal of the season against No. 24 UCLA to help the Huskies beat the Bruins, 1-0 on Sunday. Allen scored the game's only goal in the 24th minute while rushing the UCLA goalkeeper on a clearance that hit Allen in the chest and made its way into the goal.
The Huskies handed the Bruins just their first home loss of the season and snapped their four-game winning streak that included a 3-2 victory over UW in Seattle Oct. 21. In fact, UW also snapped UCLA's 10-game unbeaten streak at Drake Stadium, a span that included eight wins and two ties for the Bruins since Oct. 29 of last season.
Allen's eight goals are a career-high for the senior forward who has taken over the scoring load since fellow forward and 2006 Pac-10 Player of the Year Kevin Forrest was lost for the season with a foot injury. Since Forrest has been out, Allen has scored five goals in the last four games.
UW's win over UCLA was its fifth win over a ranked opponent this season.
Washington (2-3-1, 7-6-2) has this week off, but will take on the Bay Area schools, California and Stanford, at home next week.
This is Allen's second weekly honor and the 18th all-time award for the Huskies.
