Q & A With Emily Florence
Oct. 30, 2007
The Washington women's basketball team held its annual team media day at the Don James Center on the UW campus. GoHuskies.com caught up with senior point guard Emily Florence, one of the squad's three team captains, to talk about the upcoming season.
GoHuskies.com: How have the first few weeks of practice gone?
Emily Florence: 'Really well. They are really intense and there is a lot of excitement and energy out there with the new coaching staff and new faces - there are a lot of new freshmen. Practices have gone really well - a lot of learning, starting over. We are all like rookies out there. But I think they've gone really, really well and I am excited to start having some games.'
GH: Being a very young team, what are your expectations for the underclassmen?
EF: 'There are only three of us seniors, so we are going to have to show a lot of leadership out there with a lot of the freshmen. We just want them to go out there and not make their class a big issue. They can do great things as freshmen. They don't need to be intimidated, or scared, or shy. They can go and do anything a senior could. Even though we don't have the experience a lot of teams do with upperclassmen, I think we are going to do great things.'
GH: How do you feel your role will change this year, being a senior leader?
EF: 'I will be a little bit more of a vocal leader, rather than leading by example like I have in the past. I want to work hard, but I also have to be more vocal, and show leadership skills, because a lot of these freshmen will come on and look up to us.'
GH: Did you have any bonding activities in the offseason?
EF: 'We had like a six mile hike together. We've just had little get-togethers. We are having a team dinner soon, and we've done some community service activities together. We've done a lot of good little things to get to know each other.'
GH: How has the team adjusted to the new coaching staff?
EF: 'I think we have adjusted really well. We are really excited about the new coaching staff. They bring so much knowledge to the game, and it is fun to learn from them, who are great athletes themselves. I think that we are doing really well with the new coaching staff and Tia Jackson is going to bring a lot of wins and make this program even bigger.'
GH: What are your personal goals for the season?
EF: 'It is my senior season so I just want to go out on top. I want to do really well and turn people's heads. A lot of people think we are really young and, with a new coaching staff, we are just learning, but I think that we have a lot of potential. As a senior, I want to go out on top and we have big goals: to get to the NCAA tournament, to win a Pac-10 championship.'
GH: Thanks Emily. Good luck this season.
