Clayton wins twice, advances to semifinals of ITA National Indoor Championships

Freshman Alex Clayton didn't lose a set in his two matches against ranked opponents today to advance to his second straight semifinals and earn a shot against the nation's top ranked collegiate at the ITA National Indoor Championships hosted by Ohio State University at the Racquet Club in Columbus, Ohio. Stanford's other representatives, sophomore Richard Wire and doubles team of freshman Ted Kelly and junior Blake Muller, were felled in their matches.
Clayton opened his day against 31st ranked Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine, who he dispatched of 6-2, 6-4 to advance to a quarterfinals match later that day against 4th seeded and 10th ranked Greg Ouellette from Florida. Clayton beat him by nearly the same score, 6-3, 6-4 to extend his perfect tournament in which he has yet to lose a match. Tommorow Clayton will face the top ranked player Somdev Devvarmen of Virginia for the right to play in Sunday's final.
Wire lost his second round match to Adam Holmstrom of Denver today 6-1, 7-6(1). He advanced to the second round by beatingJack Baker of South Alabama yesterday 6-3, 6-3 after earning an automatic bid to the tournament for winnng the ITA Regional Championships in Seattle two weeks ago. Doubles team Kelly and Muller lost in their consolation match to 20th ranked Jonas Berg and Erling Tveit of Mississippi today 8-1. They were relegated to the consolation round after their close, 9-7 loss to Andy Connelly and Ross Cunningham of Tulsa yesterday. Kelly and Muller won the Seattle tournament as a part of a Stanford sweep to earn their bid to this elite tournament.
Clayton has advanced to the semifinals of both tournaments he has played in this year, last doing it in the All-American Championships one month ago before losing to eventual champion Travis Helgeson. Clayton improved his record against ranked opponents to 8-1 this year.
