BERKELEY, Calif. - No. 14 California won its third straight game with a 2-1 decision over Washington State Friday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 11-5 overall (3-3 Pac-10), while the Cougars dropped to 10-3-3 overall (3-2-1).

'Washington State is a good team,' said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. 'They play a style that's very competitive. They're very committed to the ball and are very well coached. I'm impressed with the way our team played today against a very well coached Washington State team. We wanted to try to get the ball wide because we felt that service from the flanks was going to be dangerous. In the end, it got us the goal that won the game. We have to do a much better job of not giving up goals early. We shouldn't have to chase the game consistently. As far as the overall game, this was the best 90 minutes we've played this season.'

Junior forward Valerie Barnes recorded the game-winning goal in the 72nd minute when she followed up freshman forward Alex Morgan's shot that went off the cross bar. The play developed when freshman defender Megan Jesolva delivered a cross from the left side, and Morgan headed the ball for the initial shot that led to the goal. The goal was Barnes' third of the season and second game winner.

Washington went ahead 1-0 with a goal in the third minute by Brooke Bemis. Allison Scurich delivered a long free kick deep into the penalty box, and Bemis half volleyed the ball into the net.

Cal senior defender Courtney Hooker quickly evened the score at 1-1 with her first career goal in the seventh minute. Hooker fired a 35-yard shot that was redirected by WSU goalkeeper Brynn Bemis off the cross bar and ultimately across the goal line.

The first two goals were the first shots of the game for both teams. Cal held a 13-6 overall shot advantage, with junior forward Nikki Schrey pacing the team with four shots and Hooker adding three. The Bears also owned a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Sophomore goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini made one save to help Cal secure the win. Brynn Bemis also registered a save for the Cougars.

Cal wraps up its regular season home slate against Washington Sunday, Nov. 4, at noon at Edwards Stadium. The Bears will honor their seven seniors prior to the contest.
