Softball Dominates in First Day of Fall Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. - The Sun Devil Softball team kicked-off their 2007 fall tournament season in decisive manner Friday afternoon with a three-game sweep as they beat PhoenixCollege 13-0, Central Arizona 12-0 and MesaCommunity College 22-4. The Sun Devils will continue their first fall tournament tomorrow with a game against PhoenixCollege and a doubleheader against MCC. First pitch is at 9:30 a.m. at ASU's Farrington Stadium.

 

Game one saw Katie Burkhart struck out 12 as the Sun Devil softball team opened their fall season with a decisive 13-0 win over PhoenixCollege.  Big hitters were Rene Welty, a transfer from Chandler-GilbertCommunity College, who went 2 for 3 including a 3 run home run, Mindy Cowles who went 2 for 2 with a double and a homerun, and CJ Carlson, who also went 2 for 2.  Brooke Neuman homered in the 7th inning in her first at bat as a Sun Devil.

 

In Game two, spurred by a seven run first inning, the Sun Devil offense continued to be on fire on their way to a 12-0 victory over CentralArizonaCollege.  Freshman Dani Rae Lougheed went 2 for 2 at the plate and sophomore pitcher Megan Elliott went the distance with a complete game shut out, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 5 batters.

 

In the nightcap, the Sun Devil offensive continued its dominance en route to a 16-4 win over MesaCommunity College to wrap day one of their first fall tournament.  Freshman Lesley Rogers led the way with a solid 3-for-4 performance at the plate.  Renee Welty, Kristen Miller and Michelle Nulliner all contributed multiple hits to the offensive onslaught.  Mandy Urfer was impressive in the circle, going the distance to earn a victory in her first collegiate start as a pitcher. 

 

The Sun Devils return to action Saturday November 3 with a 9:30 am game against Phoenix College, followed by games against Mesa Community College at 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. All games will be played at ASU's Farrington Stadium with free admission.
