Two Sun Devils Advance to Quarterfinals After Day One of the Women's Tennis Thunderbird Tournament

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 13th annual ASU Women's Tennis Thunderbird kicked-off Friday showcasing the new 2007-2008 Sun Devil squad, who represented well with four Sun Devils advancing past the first round in the main bracket and two more advancing on to the quarterfinal rounds to be played tomorrow. Action will continue tomorrow starting at 8:30 a.m. with doubles followed with the main bracket quarterfinals at ASU's WhitemanTennisCenter.


To start off the day the Sun Devils went undefeated in doubles action with Kelcy McKenna and Jessica Leitch leading the way with an 8-3 win over Michigan's Rika Tatsuno and Denise Muresan followed up with an 8-4 win from Wendy Pilecka and Micaela Hein over Kansas State's Viviana Yrueta and Antea Huljiev.


In singles action ASU started off strong with four of the six Sun Devils in action advancing past the first round of 32. Wendy Pilecka stepped up for a decisive 6-0, 6-1 win over Michigan's Lindsey Howard while freshman, Kelcy McKenna topped Purdue's Alejandra Boeker in straight sets as well 6-2, 6-2. Laila Abdala also won in straight sets with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Michigan's Kari Wig, with Jessica Leitch also adding a 6-1, 6-1 win to the tally to advance to the round of 16.


In the round of 16 two of the four Sun Devils still alive were able to advance as Kelcy McKenna topped Michigan's Whitney Taney 6-4, 7-5 while Laila Abdala made quick work of Brooke Beier blanking the Boilermaker 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinal round. McKenna will face-off against the No. 1 seed Stephanie Kusano of Cal while Laila Abdala faces Utah's Jane Kryunchkova. Both matches start at approximately 9:30 following the finish of doubles action.


The 2007 ASU Women's Tennis Thunderbird Tournament continues tomorrow with doubles action kicking off the day with an 8:30 a.m. start followed with the main bracket quarterfinal round starting at approximately 9:30. Play continues all day in Tempe at ASU's WhitemanTennisCenter.
