Nov. 3, 2007
Columbus, OH - Freshman Alex Clayton fell to top seeded Somdev Devvarmen of Virginia today in the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships at the Racquet Club in Columbus, Ohio.
Clayton lost 6-4, 6-4 to the top ranked player in college, according to the Fila ITA preseason rankings. The loss is only Clayton's second as a member of the Cardinal. His other came one month ago in the All-American Championships when he made the semifinals before losing to the eventual champion. Clayton's performance in that tournament earned him a wild card draw to this elite National Indoor Championships. Clayton's overall record fell to 9-2, including an 8-2 mark against nationally ranked opponents.
Clayton's road to the semifinals began with a win on Thursday over Dominic Inglot of Virginia, then with two wins on Friday against Bassam Beidas of Pepperdine and fourth seeded Greg Ouellette of Florida to advance to today's semifinal match against the junior Devvarmen.
Sophomore Richard Wire, Stanford's other singles representative, lost in his second round match to Adam Holmstrom of Denver after winning his first round match against Jack Baker of South Alabama. Stanford's doubles entrant team of freshman Ted Kelly and junior Blake Muller lost in their two matches. Both Wire and Kelly-Muller won the ITA Regional Championships in Seattle two weeks for a Stanford sweep of the event to earn their bids to the Indoor Championships.
