No. 14 Cal Defeats Washington, 2-1, for 4th Straight Win

Nov. 4, 2007

BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior forward Valerie Barnes posted her second game-winning goal of the weekend to lead No. 14 California to a 2-1 victory over Washington Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. The Golden Bears improved to 12-5 (4-3 Pac-10) with the win on Senior Day, while the Huskies fell to 5-11-1 (2-4-1).

Redshirt sophomore forward Katherine Daiss registered the first goal of the game in the 36th minute. Redshirt sophomore forward Torrey Delaplane served a cross from the right flank to the far post, and Daiss calmly tapped the ball into the net for her third goal of the season.

Washington evened the game at 1-1 with a penalty kick by Veronica Perez-Murillo in the 74th minute.

Cal showed determination to go back ahead quickly. At 74:07, junior midfielder Nikki Schrey sent a long driven shot on goal, but Washington goalkeeper Taylor Carr was able to make the save. Carr registered seven saves overall today.

Barnes tallied her fourth goal of the season in the 79th minute to put Cal ahead for good at 2-1. She scored by following up senior midfielder Caroline Lea's shot that went off the cross bar. In the Bears' 2-1 triumph over Washington State on Friday, Barnes also netted the game-winning goal by knocking in Alex Morgan's shot that went off the cross bar.

Cal held a 17-5 shot advantage for the game, with senior midfielder Caitlin Hannegan and Schrey leading the Bears with thee shots apiece. Perez-Murillo paced the Huskies with two shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini needed to make only one save for Cal, but it was a big one. With under four minutes to play in the first half, Washington's Shuree Hyatt fired a hard shot on goal, and Pellegrini made an acrobatic play to punch the ball off the cross bar. The Bears eventually cleared the ball out of harms way.

Before the game, Cal honored its seven seniors - Hannegan, Lea Courtney Hooker, Kristine Relja, Stephanie Wieger, Laurie Gartrell and Nicole Jarbo.

Riding a four-game winning streak, Cal wraps up the regular season at Oregon State Nov. 9 and Oregon Nov. 11.
