No. 14 Cal Edges UW Women 2-1 in Soccer
Nov. 4, 2007
BERKELEY, Calif. - Valerie Barnes scored the game-winning goal in the 79th minute Sunday, lifting 14th-ranked California to a 2-1 win over the Washington women in a Pac-10 soccer game at Goldman Field.
The Golden Bears (12-5) collected their fourth consecutive victory. They improved to 4-3 in conference games with their third straight win over UW. The Huskies, who are coached by Cal alumna Lesle Gallimore, still own a slim 9-8 lead in the all-time series.
Washington's record dropped to 5-11-1 overall with a 2-4-1 Pac-10 ledger.
Katherine Daiss scored at 35:42, giving Cal a 1-0 lead it maintained for the next 37 minutes. She ran on to Torrey Delaplane's cross from the right flank and tapped it inside the far post for her third goal of the season.
The Bears out shot UW 7-2 during the first half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Carr (Culver City, Calif.) kept the Huskies close while Cal pressured the goal in the early part of the second half. The Bears launched five shots during that span, but one sailed high and Carr saved the other four.
Sophomore forward Veronica Perez-Murillo (San Mateo, Calif.) tallied the equalizer at 73:19. She converted a penalty kick after a UW teammate was fouled in the box. That was the first goal of the season for Perez-Murillo.
Cal answered less than five minutes later when Barnes netted her second game-winning goal of the weekend. She also had the decisive tally in a 2-1 win over Washington State on Friday.
Barnes followed up a shot by Caroline Lea that caromed off the crossbar and pushed it into the goal at 78:04 for her fourth goal.
The Huskies were unable to get off a shot the rest of the way. They completed the road portion of their schedule by being swept in the Bay Area, including Friday's 4-0 loss at No. 2 Stanford.
Carr finished with seven saves for UW, which was out shot 17-5 for the game.
Bears' goalkeeper Gina Pellegrini was credited with one save. She made an acrobatic play on a hard 42nd-minute shot by Shuree Hyatt (Kent, Wash./Kentlake) and managed to punch it off the crossbar.
The Washington women are in a stretch of four consecutive games against ranked opponents. They close out the regular season next weekend at Husky Soccer Field. The Huskies host ninth-ranked USC, Friday, Nov. 9 at 5 p.m. and No. 1 UCLA, Sunday, Nov. 11 at noon.
