No. 4 USC Goes Up Early For 1-0 Win Over ASU
Nov. 4, 2007
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 4 USC women's soccer team kept its unbeaten streak at McAlister Field intact with a 1-0 win over Arizona State on Sunday afternoon. The Trojans tacked up a goal in the ninth minute and made sure it stood up to ensure victory in USC's final home game of the season. USC will finish out Pac-10 competition next weekend in Washington before awaiting the NCAA Tournament selection, to be announced on Monday, Nov. 12. The Women of Troy boast a 12-2-2 overall record and are now the second-place team in the Pac-10 behind the nation's top-ranked UCLA with a 4-1-1 conference record. Arizona State moves to 9-9-1, 3-4-1
Sunday's game-winning goal was blasted in by Marihelen Tomer at the 8:00 mark of the match. Amy Rodriguez pushed the ball up to Tomer on the right side, and Tomer was able to fend off several Sun Devils, keeping control of the ball and making her move through the ASU defenders to grab enough room to launch a strike crosscage. After 82 more minutes of competitive and tough play, Tomer's score stood as the game-winner, giving the sophomore her third game-winning goal of the season.
The Trojans put a good deal of pressure on the Sun Devils from the start. USC's two seniors, Laura McKee and Lauren Brown, both started up front for the Women of Troy after being honored by their teammates and fans in the pregame Senior Day ceremony. McKee, who has been sidelined this season by illness, was a big part of the Trojans offensive attack early in the game, and Brown continued her solid play at striker by helping to create several USC looks on goal. USC put up six shots in each half, including a booming shot from Megan Ohai that just clipped the top of the crossbar in the waning minutes of the first half.
Arizona State had its best look on goal late in the match when Carla Scanniello got a head on an ASU free kick, but the ball went just wide in the 84th minute of play to help carry the Trojans to their 10th shutout of the season. USC has now outscored its opponents 34-9 this year.
The last USC team to boast an undefeated run at home was in 1995, when the Trojans played their games at Howard Jones Field and went 6-0-1 at home. The 2007 Women of Troy have recorded a 7-0-1 mark at McAlister Field this season, running USC's overall home unbeaten streak to 10 straight games. USC's two losses this season were an early overtime loss on the road against Indiana and a loss at top-ranked UCLA. Ties have come to No. 2 Stanford on the road and to No. 8 Tennessee at McAlister Field.
The Women of Troy now hit the road for their final Pac-10 games of the regular season, first visiting Washington at 7 p.m. on Friday (Nov. 9) and then heading to Washington State for a 12 p.m. game on Sunday (Nov. 11).
