Seniors Shine on Senior Day as No. 23 Cal Beats UCLA, 3-1
Nov. 4, 2007
BERKELEY - The senior class of the No. 23 California men's soccer team couldn't have asked for a better final regular-season game at Edwards Stadium, as all three seniors scored in the Golden Bears' 3-1 victory over UCLA Sunday afternoon. Javier Ayala-Hil, Luke Sassano and Andrew Jacobson each found the back of the net in their farewell home game. Cal improved to 10-4-1, 4-2 on the season, while the Bruins fell to 8-8-2, 4-4-1.
Ayala-Hil had a tremendous game, as he was involved in all three Cal scores. After notching the first goal of the game in the 55th minute, he earned assists in the other two scores. It was Ayala-Hil's third goal and his third and fourth assists of the campaign.
Sassano tallied the eventual game-winning goal in the 63rd minute. Similarly to how Ayala-Hil scored his goal, Sassano drove between the UCLA defenders and blasted a shot that beat the keeper to his right. It was the first goal of the season for Sassano, who also earned his third assist of the year on Ayala-Hil's goal.
After the Bruins got on the scoreboard, Jacobson ended UCLA's bid for a comeback with his goal in the 82nd minute. Jacobson earned his third goal of 2007 when he received a pass at the top of the box and fired a shot that found the back of the net to put the game away.
The Bears hit the road for the rest of the regular season. They head to the Pacific Northwest to tangle with Washington Friday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. and Oregon State Sunday, Nov. 11, at 1:30 p.m.
