Q & A With Heidi McNeill
Nov. 5, 2007
Junior Heidi McNeill had a big game in UW's first exhibition with Love & Basketball, Saturday. The 6-3 forward tallied a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds. After playing sparingly as a freshman and sophomore, McNeill looks to be more of an impact player this year as a junior and if her first performance in the Huskies' exhibition game is any indication, she should be on her way for a breakout season. McNeill took some time to talk to GoHuskies.com at least week's media day:
GoHuskies: How has the this year's transition gone, with all of the new coaches and players coming in?
Heidi McNeill: 'It has gone really well. I like all of the coaches a lot. From the moment we met Tia (Jackson), she was just someone to be respected, and we respect her a lot. I really like everyone a lot.'
GoHuskies.com: Do you feel that your role is going to change this year, being one of the experienced veterans?
HM: 'Definitely, I have a lot more experience than the freshmen and sophomores coming in. We are a young bunch so I am just trying to lead by example, and vocally trying to lead them also.'
GoHuskies: Do you have any personal goals for the season?
HM: 'Personally, I would like to just get out on the floor a lot more. I was kind of hindered last year with a stress fracture, so I want to be out there on the floor and have a role on the team. Get out there and get some boards and score a little bit - anything to help the team.'
GoHuskies: I hear you like to ride horses. How long have you been riding?
HM: 'I've been horseback riding since I was three years old. I have a horse named Sassy. She is the granddaughter of `Seattle Slew' who used to race at Emerald Downs. Anytime I get away from the team and get to go home I like to go riding on the trails or anywhere.'
GoHuskies: Have you ever competed?
HM: 'Right now it is just for fun, but when I was younger, I used to do the whole Hunter Jumper competition and three day eventing, and compete for ribbons. But right now I just don't have time for it.'
GoHuskies: What are your goals as a team for this season?
HM: 'Obviously we were picked to finish sixth in the Pac-10, but we think we are going to surprise a lot of people. So we are going to finish a lot higher than that and do one better than last year. Our focus is just on improving.'
GoHuskies: What are you looking forward to most this year?
HM: 'Just playing. I feel like we all have a fresh start, and I am really excited for the season, just to get into the games and play.'
GoHuskies: Good luck this year.
