Wallace Tied For Fifth After First Round of CordeValle Collegiate

SAN MARTIN, Calif. - Washington sophomore Darren Wallace shot a 3-under 69 to lead the Huskies during the first round of the CordeValle Collegiate played at the par-72, 7,169-yard CordeValle Country Club, Monday.
Wallace is tied for fifth on the individual leaderboard after sinking five birdies during the opening 18-holes. Wallace trails the leader, UCLA's James Lee who shot a 7-under 65, by four strokes and is tied with Texas A&M's Andrea Pavan. Lee holds a three-stroke lead on the field with Augusta State's Henrik Norlander, Coastal Carolina's Sam Lyons and USC's Rory Hie tied for second at 4-under 68.
The Huskies carded a first-round score of 15-over 375 and are in 11th place heading into Tuesday's second round. UCLA leads the team field at 7-under 353, followed by Coastal Carolina (6-under 354) and Texas A&M (even-par 360). Stanford and USC are tied for fourth (3-over 363).
UW sophomore Nick Taylor was the other Husky to finish the first round under-par, shooting 1-under 71. Taylor is tied for 11th with five other players and is just one stroke behind the four players tied for seventh. Taylor's opening round included birdies on the sixth and 15th holes.
Behind Wallace and Taylor, the Huskies struggled with senior Zach Bixler and freshman Kevin Spooner turning in the next best rounds at 5-over 77 and 6-over 78, respectively. Bixler is tied for 50th and Spooner is tied for 55th. Juniors John Wise (8-over 80) and Kellen Eakin (11-over 83) are tied for 62nd and 69th, respectively.
The second round of the tournament continues Tuesday with stroke play beginning at 8 a.m. PT. The final round wraps up Wednesday beginning at 8 a.m. as well. Live scoring for the tournament is available on Golfstat.com.
