Hey all you Gym Devil fans!
It has already been an exciting year for all of ASU athletics and we are certainly no exception to this trend! We've come back from summer ready to work harder than ever. We started off the year with a team BBQ welcoming our six new freshmen and their parents. It was great getting to know each other and it was clear from the start that our team had great chemistry. Our six freshmen stemming from all over the country add a great sense of thrill to our team. Combined with our five returning juniors and solo sophomore, there is no doubt that we have found a great mix for this season.
Our preseason conditioning this year was a great preview for what is to come during competitions. It's the hardest working group of girls I have ever been around. After 5:45 am work outs and mountain runs, I know we are in great shape to get back to where we belong, Nationals!
We have been extremely busy in and outside of the gym. Our time out of the gym has been spent bonding, helping with the community, and of course supporting the rest of ASU athletics! A few weeks ago we went on our annual team camping trip which always proves to be my favorite weekend of the year. We spent our time together around the camp fire telling stories, playing taboo and admiring the way the lighter fluid increased the flame. For Halloween, we all dressed up in costumes and joined the City of Phoenix Police and Fire Departments in helping the community with children's Halloween activities. Just this last weekend, we teamed up with some of the ASU men's baseball team and helped out with the 3-day breast cancer awareness walk. We were able to help out by setting up hundreds of tents for the participants to camp out in. It was a very motivating experience and I admired every mile they walked. They were extremely thankful for our help and we couldn't have been happier to lend a hand, after all they had a weekend full of walking 60 miles!
Inside the gym, our dedication has paid off. Last Friday we had an intersquad meet and it was great seeing all the girls in their gold and maroon leotards. It was especially exciting seeing the freshmen feel their sense of Sun Devil pride for the first time. I could tell all the girls had a heightened sense of confidence and it proved to be effective, especially on beam. All of the routines have been put together and we hit 6 for 6.
After a season plagued with misfortune and injuries, we have come back prepared and stronger than ever. Our first meet is the 4th of January and I have no doubt that we will be a force to be reckoned with!
