San Martin, Calif. - Freshman Sihwan Kim shot a three-under 69 in the final round of the CordeValle Collegiate today, and claimed a share of the first tournament title of his collegiate career. Kim was one of three Stanford players to card an under-par final round, and helped carry the No. 9 Cardinal to a second place finish in the competitive field. Stanford shot its best round of the tournament (-6, 354) on the final day, and was one of two squads to finish under par for the event.
Playing at the CordeValle Golf Club in San Martin, Calif., Stanford finished with a three round total of one-under 1,079 (363-362-354). Host UCLA won the tournament by 11 strokes, finishing with a 12-under 1,068 (353-362-353). USC (+7, 1,087), Lamar (+9,1,089) and Augusta State (+10, 1,090) rounded out the top-five.
Kim, who was tied for 34th place after the opening round, roared back into the race with two of the tournament's best rounds over the next two days. The freshman moved into fourth place with a four-under 68 yesterday and followed up with a three-under 69 today to finish in a tie with UCLA's James Lee and Augusta State's Henrik Norlander for the tournament title. He finished the event with a 54-hole total of five-under 211 (74-68-69), and earned the first top medalist honor of his career.
