Cal has strong showing in first day of competition at Hoosierland Open Invitational

Bloomington, Ind. - Several individuals of the No. 3-ranked Cal women's swimming team, including senior Emily Silver, performed extremely well in the first day of action at the 2007 Hoosierland Open Invitational, hosted by Indiana University at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center.
No. 24 Indiana, Cincinnati, Arkansas, Florida International, No. 12 Tennessee, Kenyon [Division III], Kentucky [diving], Miami (Ohio) and No. 16 Penn State all join the Golden Bears in the three-day competition. Team scoring will not be taking place in accordance with NCAA compliance, just individual scoring only in the three-day tournament format.
Silver captured first-place in the 50 free with a season-best 22.74, while fellow teammate Madison Kennedy finished second with a mark of 22.93 (also a season-best). Freshmen Tara Thomas (23.25) and Hannah Wilson (23.38) placed fourth and fifth respectively.
Silver also outlasted Penn State's Kelly Nelson in the 200 IM with a first-place time of 1:58.55. Sophomores Courtney Eronemo (2:04.42) and Heather White (2:04.92) and Wilson (2:05.22) placed 9-11 respectively in the consolation final of the 200 IM.
In the 200 free relay, Cal's foursome of Silver, Thomas, Wilson and Kennedy captured a first place finish with a time of 1:31.05.
