Cardinal Set for Fullerton Open

Stanford, Calif. - The Stanford wrestling team will head south this weekend to compete in the Fullerton Open, hosted by Cal State Fullerton at Titan Gym in Fullerton, Calif. The bulk of the Cardinal squad will compete, including most of the Cardinal's 17 newcomers, who will get be competing in their second collegiate tournament.
The tournament, which includes more than 300 competitors, is scheduled to begin on Sunday at 9 a.m. The Cardinal will get a preview of its conference competition, as the Open features seven of the ten Pac-10 teams. In addition to the Cardinal and the host Titans, Arizona State, Cal Poly, Cal State Bakersfield, UC Davis and Portland State will represent the Pac-10 at the event. Menlo, Embry-Riddle, Sierra, Palomar and Pima Colleges as well as club teams from San Jose State and Arizona will also send wrestlers.
Stanford is led by two returning All-Americans, senior 125-pounder Tanner Gardner and senior 157-pounder Josh Zupancic. Both wrestlers are 6-0 so far this season, and claimed titles at the competitive Central Missouri Open last week.
Zupancic returns to Fullerton as the defending champion at 157 pounds. Last year, he notched five consecutive wins and capped the day with a 5-4 decision over Cal Poly's Chase Pami.
'This weekend will give us a great chance to get a look at some of our conference competition,' said Head Coach Kerry McCoy. 'It will give a lot of guys a chance to get more experience, and allows us to gauge what we need to do to improve for the Pac-10 season. We built some great momentum last week, and we plan to build on that success in Sunday's competition.'
