Stanford Takes First Day Lead at Nike Cup

Nov. 15, 2007

Long Beach, CA - The third-ranked Stanford men's swim team took an early lead after the first day of competition on Thursday at the UC-Irvine Nike Cup at the Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool.

Stanford took 597 points to Brigham Young's 269 and Air Force's 212. The Stanford team of Austin Staab, Jason Dunford, David Dunford and Jake Allen took the first win of the night in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:19.71. The quartet set a new meet record, besting the 1:19.78 set by UCLA in 1992. The win marks the fifth straight year that the Cardinal have claimed the relay title. Senior Daniel Beal won the 500 free in 4:21.41. Stanford swept the top spots as Beal was followed by teammates David Mosko (4:23.25) and Phillip Morrison (4:27.96) in second and third place. The 200 IM saw another Stanford victory as Junior Nate Cass won in a time of 1:47.47. Stanford's dominance continued in the 50 free, as the top three spots were taken by freshman Austin Staab (19.86), junior Jason Dunford (19.89) and, keeping it in the family, sophomore David Dunford (20.44). The night was capped by an impressive win of over ten seconds by the Stanford team of Eugene Godsoe, Nate Cass, Austin Staab and Jason Dunford in the 400 medley relay with a new meet record time of 3:13.15. The record was stolen from the Stanford squad that turned in a 3:14.54 just last year and marks the fifth straight year Stanford has won the event.

The Nike Cup continues Friday with the finals beginning at 6:00 p.m.
