Cal Inks Nationally-Ranked Morris, Kuehu to National Letters of Intent
Nov. 16, 2007
BERKELEY, Calif. - Casey Morris and Shawna-Lei Kuehu, both nationally-ranked student-athletes, have signed National Letters of Intent to play basketball at California beginning with the 2008-09 season, Golden Bear head coach Joanne Boyle announced Friday. Cal is tied with Ohio State for the 20th-ranked recruiting class, according to Blue Star Report.
'We're excited to welcome Casey and Shawna to the Cal family,' Boyle said. 'Casey will be an immediate asset to our backcourt. She brings athleticism, length, terrific court vision and the ability to score or distribute the basketball. She also brings leadership and competitiveness to our team, and her experience winning a state title as a freshman will be invaluable to Cal.'
Morris, a 5-9 point and shooting guard from Piedmont High School, is ranked No. 35 nationally by Blue Star Report and No. 51 by HoopGurlz.com. HoopGurlz has Morris as the No. 10-rated point guard. After averaging 24 points per game as a junior, Morris has scored 1,358 points in her first three prep seasons. She also contributed eight assists, four rebounds and two steals a game last season.
Morris, who plays club basketball for Cal Storm with Kuehu, participated in the 2007 USA Youth Development Festival.
In 2006, Morris was named the co-MVP of the End of the Oregon Trail tournament, and in 2005, she was picked to the all-tournament team. Additionally, Street & Smith's chose her as an honorable mention All-American in 2006. As a freshman, Morris landed on the Cal-Hi Sports all-freshman team after contributing to Piedmont's state championship. Other awards Morris has garnered include third-team all-state in 2004-05 and all-metro and all-league in 2005-06.
Morris also plays softball at Piedmont High School and is an accomplished artist. Casey's older sister, Chazny, is a sophomore guard on the basketball team at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Their mother, Rosalyn, graduated from Cal.
Kuehu, a 5-10 guard from Honolulu, Hawaii, is rated No. 25 by HoopGurlz and No. 7 at her position. Blue Star Report has Kuehu tabbed at No. 32 nationally. She averaged 18 points per game as a sophomore at Ponahou School. Kuehu was named the 2005 and 2006 State Player of the Year by the Honolulu Advertiser and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. Kuehu was also named the 2006 Gatorade State Player of the Year. She missed last season due to a torn ACL in her left knee but is prepared to play her senior season.
'Shawna is one of the top guards in the country,' said Boyle. 'She is a versatile wing player that will give us a new dimension on the perimeter. She can do it all: shoot, score off the dribble, pass, rebound and defend. Her performance at Nike Nationals, in particular, showed that she belongs in the company of the nation's most elite players. We look forward to having her in a Cal uniform.'
Additional awards Kuehu has garnered include 2006 Street & Smith's honorable mention All-America and 2005 and 2006 first-team all-state.
Kuehu posted a state-record 37 points on 16-of-23 shooting in the 2006 state championship game. While playing for Cal Storm, she was chosen to the all-tournament team at the Nike Nationals and at the End of the Oregon Trail tournament.
