Samaniego Wins Three-Meter Crown at Hoosierland Invite
Nov. 16, 2007
All-American Marisa Samaniego posted her sixth win of the season as she won the three-meter contest at the Hoosierland Invitational in Bloomington, IN. The junior edged out Indiana's top diver to win, posting a season-high score of 310.10.
Samaniego had to move her way up to the top spot after a few rough dives in the prelims (254.60) and semifinal (245.70) rounds. She ended up winning by just 1.5 points.
'Marisa had a rough day and struggled through her first two lists,' said dive coach Tom Stebbins. 'She did a nice job putting herself in a position to win in the final and did a really good job today.'
Junior Shannon Pirozzi made her second final of the meet as she placed 10th with a score of 239.25. She posted scores of 242.85 in the prelim and 251.15 in the semi's.
Freshmen Morgan Erpenbeck (222.35, season-best) and Laura Winn (212.30) finished 14th and 16th respectively as both competed in the semifinal round. Erpenbeck had a prelim score of 221.20, while Winn scored 231.40.
Junior Tess Schofield advanced to the semi's after posting a score of 232.40, but pulled out to rest up for tomorrow's tower competition. She finished 19th overall.
Junior Brittany Hill did not advance out of the prelim round after competing with a new dive addition to her list. She failed to register a sixth dive and finished 24th overall in the prelim (212.2).
'Overall it's been a pretty good meet,' noted Stebbins. 'Marisa's performance is very encouraging because of how hectic this travel schedule has been. We didn't get in until 4:00 am on Tuesday and still had to practice later that day. For her to stand up there in her last list after a long day of competition is pretty impressive. She managed herself very well. Shannon also did a good job and I think we are in a good spot for tomorrow's tower competition.'
Schofield, Hill and Erpenbeck will compete on tower Saturday to wrap up the Hoosierland Invitational.
