Women's Golf Signs Two Top Players
Nov. 16, 2007
The UCLA women's golf program signed a pair of top junior golfers to National Letters of Intent, the athletic department announced this week.
Expected to enroll for Fall of 2008 are Stephanie Kono and Brianna Do, both nationally ranked junior players. Each has participated in a variety of USGA national championship events, and Kono this summer advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Girls Junior Championship.
'Both players will make an immediate impact on our roster next Fall, and we are thrilled to have signed such incredibly talented players this year,' said UCLA Head Coach Carrie Forsyth.
Kono, a senior at Punahou School in Honolulu, HI, was ranked third nationally by the American Junior Golf Assn. She earned First-Team AJGA All-America honors in 2007 after recording several Top 10 finishes and winning the Arizona Silver Belle Championship last December. At the 2007 U.S. Girls Junior Championship, she tied for third in stroke play competition and won three match play competitions before falling 2-up to Kristen Park, the eventual champion.
'Stephanie Kono is currently the highest ranked junior golfer in the class of 2008,' said UCLA Head Coach Carrie Forsyth. 'She is also an excellent student and will bring with her a plethora of championship golf experience. '
Do, a senior at Long Beach Wilson High, was ranked 20th by the AJGA and earned Second-Team AJGA All-America honors in 2007. This summer she tied for 51st in stroke play competition at the U.S. Women's Amateur before falling in the first round of match play. In June of 2006, she won consecutive junior events and recorded three other Top 10 results. Last season, she placed second at the PING Junior at The Woodlands.
'Brianna Do is an exceptional young player, and is regarded in the junior ranks as one of the best in her class,' said Forsyth. 'She was a member of the 2007 Junior Solheim Team along with Stephanie. She will definitely make an immediate impact on our team.'
