Stanford Women's Gymnastics Announces Letter-Of-Intent Signings

Stanford, Calif. - Stanford women's gymnastics announced the signing of three outstanding student-athletes to national letters-of-intent on Monday as Alyssa Brown, Catherine Nguyen and Nicole Pechanec are expected to join the Stanford women's gymnastics squad in the fall of 2008.
'We are really excited about this year's recruiting class and what they bring to SWG as well as the entire Stanford community,' said Stanford head coach Kristen Smyth. 'Alyssa, Nicole and Cat are bright students and accomplished gymnasts. They bring a great mix of talents, international competitive experience, charisma and style.'
Brown is a Canadian National Team member training at Gymnastics Mississuaga under Alex Bard. Alyssa has been a consistent and steady performer for the Canadian national team over the last few years. She has extensive international experience and has proven herself to be one of Canada's best all around performers. Alyssa has been a World Championships team member for the last two seasons and was the highest scoring all around performer and a shining star in the team competition at the 2007 event. She hopes to earn one of the two all around positions to represent Canada at the 2008 Olympic Games and was recently invited to represent Canada at the prestigious 2008 American Cup in Madison Square Garden. She's also competed at the Commonwealth Games, Pacific Alliance Meet and has been a Pan American Games member.
'We are so excited to have Alyssa join us next fall,' offered Smyth. 'Alyssa is calm under pressure, competitively savvy and a natural leader.'Nguyen is an International Elite gymnast and currently ranks 15th in the United States. She trains at World Olympic Gymnastics Academy (WOGA) under Evgeny Marchenko and Natasha Boyarskaya. Catherine got a late start in gymnastics and has only been competing seriously since 2004 but has made a name for herself on the U.S. National Team. She is a gifted performer with exquisite lines and exceptional ranges of motion. Nguyen has competed at the Visa Championships the last three seasons as well as the U.S. Classic.'Cat is an elegant and stylish performer with unlimited potential. We are all really excited to help her flourish in the college environment,' said Smyth.
Pechanec is a member of the Czech National team and trains at the Parkettes National Training Center in Allentown, PA, under Yvette Pechanec and Bill and Donna Strauss. She had high finishes in a pair of 2007 meets, taking first on balance beam at the 2007 Ostrava World Cup, as well as second on floor exercise at the Glasgow World Cup. She also competed in the 2007 European Championships and was a World Championships team member in 2006 and 2007. She was born in the U.S. to Czech parents and has spent the last two years representing the Czech Republic and competing on its national team.
'Nicole is a real diamond,' commented Smyth. 'She has a unique background, gorgeous lines, international flair, and is a brilliant performer.'
